When is lubricant supposed to be used during sex and how is it to be used?

Answer: Hi there- thanks for your question!

Lubricant is used to reduce the friction or rubbing that can occur between two or more body parts during sexual activities. Either partner may apply the lubricant directly to the penis, or it may be applied to the woman’s genitals, either externally or inside the vagina. The lubricant can be squirted on directly or can be poured into the hand or on the fingertips and then applied. Additional lubricant can be used as needed during intercourse. The SexualityandU website is a great resource for additional information.

It is important to remember that there is no right or wrong way to use lubricants. Experiment with what works best for you. If you are using latex condoms, a diaphragm, or a cervical cap, you should only ever use water-based lubricants. Petroleum-based lubricants such as Vaseline are NOT safe to use – they can cause the latex in condoms and diaphragms to break down.
